BMW withdraw from F1 at end of 2009
by Admin on Wed Jul 29, 2009 8:48 pm
Another manufacturer leaving F1 after BMW today announced they will quit at the end of the 2009 season.. with Renault a strong possibility for withdrawing too it looks like the grid wont be much bigger next year than it is this year. FOTA are suggesting 3 car teams which i have liked the idea of for a long time though so potentially alot more cars on the grid?

At least there are plenty of teams in the wings that could fill the places of out going manufacturers, but 3 car squads may not be too bad, don't know what the FIA and circuits will do regarding the pits, most places can only fit 2 cars in

Is it not too late now for any of the other new entries who were interested in 2010 but missed out? I would have thought the deadline has passed for them preparing a car for next season... unless one of them buy the BMW team maybe?
Hopefully we will still have at least 12 teams on the grid next year either way.. Really hope it doesnt drop below 12 because i was looking forward to more drivers/teams.

I think Epilson have said that they want to take over the vacant spot. The withdraw of BMW blows the driver market wide open, i think most teams would like Kubica on their books

Yeah i was just wondering where Kubica may go... i thought possibly williams or maybe replace heikki at McLaren? Not sure wether he is still in contract though.. I imagine Heidfield will either retire or end up being an "experienced driver" for one of the new teams

Heidfeld could go to USF1, they've said that they want a rookie American in one seat and an expereinced driver in the other. Toyota showed intrest in Kubica earlier this year, but another possiblity is that Kubica could go to Renault to replace Alonso (that's if Alonso goes to Ferrari). I remember after Kubica tested a Renault in 2005, Briatore said he'd like to sign him, but he knew he was BMW owned...not anymore. Plus with BMW leaving and Piquet hanging by a thread, the swap could happen before next year.
But for sure Barrichello, Kovalainen, Nakajima and Trulli should up their games now
